Responsible gaming: the part worth reading first

Betting is entertainment that costs money on average. This page is about keeping it that way, and about what to do when it stops being that.

Starting from something honest

Most responsible gaming pages read like a legal requirement being satisfied. Here is the version we would actually say to somebody.

Betting costs money on average. Commission and spread are real, and being right slightly more often than not is not enough to overcome them. The people who do best at this treat it as a hobby with a budget, the way somebody else treats a season ticket — the money is spent, and anything that comes back is a bonus rather than a plan.

That framing is not pessimism. It is the difference between a hobby and a problem, and it is decided before the first bet rather than during a bad week.

Two things that are simply true

Chasing losses is the single largest cause of a wiped-out wallet. Not bad luck, not a bad read on a chase — the decision to add money because the earlier money is gone. And betting with borrowed money is where a hobby becomes something else, every time, without exception, and it never announces itself in advance.

Five tools that actually work

None of them requires any feature from any platform. All of them are things you do yourself, which is the point — a desk cannot supply your discipline for you.

  1. Write the weekly number downNot in your head. On paper, or in a note on your phone you will see. A number in your head is a negotiation waiting to happen; a number written on a Monday is a decision.
  2. Fix the stake size and hold itTwo to five per cent of the wallet per bet, kept constant regardless of how obvious a match feels. The matches that feel most obvious are exactly where people abandon their sizing, and exactly where cricket enjoys embarrassing them.
  3. Keep the wallet as a working floatMoney you are not going to bet this week does not need to sit on a betting platform. Withdraw regularly. It also removes the temptation that a large visible balance creates at eleven at night.
  4. Record deposits and withdrawalsActual numbers, month by month. Memory is unreliable in one specific direction here, and almost everybody who starts keeping honest records is surprised by them within two months. That surprise is the most useful information you will ever get about your own betting.
  5. Decide in advance how many matchesAn IPL season is roughly seventy matches over two months. Betting all of them at a stake that felt small in week one adds up to something you never agreed to. Pick a number of matches, not just a number of rupees.
The one-question test

Could you stop for a month, starting tonight, and feel nothing much about it? If yes, this is a hobby. If the thought produces a small argument in your head, that is worth paying attention to now rather than in six months.

What healthy looks like, and what it does not

Fine

You bet on matches you would have watched anyway, at amounts that do not change your mood either way.

Not fine

You watch matches specifically because you have money on them, and a quiet evening feels wasted.

Fine

You stop when the weekly limit is gone, even when the next game looks like a gift.

Not fine

The limit becomes a starting point that gets revised upward on a Saturday night.

Fine

People at home know roughly what you spend on it, and it is not an uncomfortable conversation.

Not fine

You are hiding the amounts, or the app, or the withdrawal messages.

Fine

Losing an evening is annoying for an hour and then forgotten.

Not fine

A loss follows you into work, into sleep, into how you speak to people at home.

Fine

The money comes from what you would otherwise spend on entertainment.

Not fine

It comes from savings, from a card, from a friend, or from money meant for something else.

Nobody moves from the left column to the right in one evening. It happens slowly, which is exactly why the written record in the tools list above is worth more than it sounds — it is the only thing that shows you the drift while it is still small.

Getting help in India

All of these are free and confidential. None of them will judge you, and none of them require you to have hit some threshold of severity first.

Kiran — the national mental health helpline, run by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Free, confidential, open 24 hours in multiple Indian languages: 1800-599-0019.

Tele-MANAS — the national tele-mental health programme, available round the clock on 14416.

Gamblers Anonymous — peer support meetings run in several Indian cities and online. No fees, no membership requirement, no obligation to speak at your first meeting.

If you are worried about someone else

The instinct is usually to cover the debt. It rarely helps and it often makes the next round larger, because it removes the consequence without touching the cause. What does help is talking about it directly, without an ultimatum attached, and pointing them at one of the numbers above. The helplines take calls from family members too.

Closing an account

Withdraw the balance, confirm it has landed, then ask the desk to close the ID. Say plainly why if the reason is that betting has become a problem. A desk that tries to talk you out of it, or offers a bonus to keep you, has told you everything you need to know about whether to go back.

And if you are under 18: none of this is for you, no legitimate desk should open an ID for you, and any that offers to is breaking its own rules.

Responsible gaming questions

Is online betting addictive?

It can be, and the fast-settling markets are the ones most associated with losing control. Session and fancy markets resolve inside a match, so a bad run compounds several times in an hour rather than once a day. That speed is the risk factor, not the sport.

What is a sensible limit?

An amount you would be entirely comfortable losing every week without it changing anything about your month. Decide it before you fund the wallet, write it down where you will see it, and treat it as a hard stop rather than a target.

Where can I get help in India?

The Kiran national mental health helpline is free, confidential and open 24 hours on 1800-599-0019. Tele-MANAS is available on 14416. Gamblers Anonymous runs meetings in several Indian cities and online, at no cost.

Can I close my BigHand99 ID?

Yes. Withdraw your balance first, confirm the payout has landed, then ask the desk to close the account. If you are stopping because betting has become a problem, say so — a desk that argues with you about it is one worth leaving anyway.
